Sloped yards are one of those problems that only gets worse over time. Without something solid holding that grade back, you end up with erosion, runoff, and a yard that's basically unusable. That's exactly the kind of situation this Cedar Rapids property was dealing with.
Here's what we were working with - a noticeable slope running along the side of the property, right next to a concrete pad. No structure holding it back, no clean edge defining the space. We came in and built a segmental block retaining wall that runs the length of that grade, stepping up naturally as the slope rises toward the back of the yard.
The block we used has that textured, natural stone look to it - dark tones with a rough face that holds up to weather and blends into the yard instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. The wall ties directly into the fence line at the far end and creates a clean, finished edge along the entire concrete pad. It's not just functional. It actually makes the space look intentional.
A well-built retaining wall does a few things at once. It stops soil movement, it defines your usable outdoor space, and it adds real structural value to the property. When it's done right, you don't have to touch it again. That's the whole point - build it once, build it right.
This is the kind of work we genuinely enjoy doing in Cedar Rapids. Solving a real problem and leaving behind something that looks great and lasts for years. If you've got a sloped yard or an erosion issue you've been putting off, this is exactly the type of solution worth looking into.
